Correspondence, 1859-1863.

Letter book of the superintendent of the newly founded Louisiana State Seminary of Learning, the predecessor of Louisiana State University. The letters are to prospective students, parents of students, and members of the governing board in regard to finances, policies, purchases of books and equipment, student conduct and discipline, and the effect of secession upon the institution. After Sherman's resignation early in 1861, there are letters from Anthony Vallas as acting superintendent and other faculty members.

Sherman was born in 1820 in Lancaster, Ohio, near the banks of the Hocking River. His father, Charles Robert Sherman, a successful lawyer who sat on the Ohio Supreme Court, died unexpectedly in 1829. He left his widow, Mary Hoyt Sherman, with eleven children and no inheritance.
